Stage 19

Well what can we say, wow, amazing, a great day

You can only know the Tour de France by experiencing it first hand. The organisation is second to none, as are the ground staff, the cyclists are just amazing and the spectators joyous.

We started the day off queuing for bread, the population having trebled at least. Bags packed and Sixty adorned with flags we set off down the road to the first hairpin. We found a great spot with a good views down and up the road. It was now midday and we weren’t going to see any of the riders until at least 4pm (note to ourselves max needs a bigger boot to carry chairs!!). We were surrounded by French, German, Danish, Italian and Slovenians. There were few bits to be seen although we did meet a small contingent from Ilkley. Sixty was well liked and had her photo taken several times.

We saw lots of people painting and chalking on the roads in between cyclists, motorists and gendarmes. We even saw very small children cycling up the hill albeit towed by a parent. The caravan was as splendid as usual advertising everyone and his family.

The cyclists started to arrive around 4.30pm. Podacar arrived first after overtaking everyone in the previous 10km. He is unstoppable. Simon Yates followed shortly after along with the other brits we recognised, Adam Yates and Geraint Thomas. We were getting a bit worried about Mark Cavendish but he duly arrive with his team mates and once again made the cut.

As soon as the race had finished, disassembling began, the whole Tour de France entourage started leaving, car, trucks, motorbikes and buses, loads of them.

We are now sat with a glass of wine and outside there is hardly a sign of the tour being here.
