Sometimes you just need a fire
Left Pula and the sun was shining, and that’s the last we saw of it. The temperature was the same but there was just a very chilly wind. We were brave and kept our shorts on though (we would have needed to unpack the boot to get our trousers hee hee). First stop today was the American Garden in Opatija, after 4 attempts, several tours around the town and a lunch stop in a Lidl car park we eventually found it. A quiet hill side garden with the remains of a castle and some very elaborate plans for the future, very interesting. Although called American the founder was a Hungarian business man who made his fortune selling paprika to America. The views were amazing up there, a lot of the plants are the same as at home but oviously growing better.
We quickly drove through Rijeka, big and noisy commercial port. Not our sort of place. Max put his wheels down and said you’ll find better further on which we did on Krk island even if the impressive bridge to get there was only half finished. Krk town itself was unexpectedly lovely. Loads of roman history, good info boards but indoors all shut until the 1st May. The Easter egg in the main square was large, maybe the 1st signs of early celebrations. Loads of churches here to celebrate Easter in.
We were meeting Davor, our host in Vrbnik town so off we went. We have marvelled at all the tiny alleyways and arches in the old towns we’d seen so far. Now we are staying in one. Out apartment is lovely, set over 3 floors with our very own small terrace, and our hosts have given us a 1 1/2 litre bottle of home made wine and had a fire blazing in the wood burner making it a very warm welcome.
