Pula
It’s hard being a tourist. When eventually we got ourselves up and out it was to walk to the sunny central square for a morning (well late morning) coffee or two. Then as usual we wandered, finding the kastel/fort with its panoramic views. We did climb to the top of the tower where we got a fine view of the amphitheatre. It was our day as we got 2 for 1tickets, so we took the elevator down to the Zerostrasse, a maze of tunnels built by the Austrians during world war one both as air raid shelters and was of moving through the city unseen.
After escaping the tunnels we were hungry and had local cuisine at a family restaurant. Barbara made the waiter smile with her efforts at Croatian, everyone around here speaks English!!
To end the days wandering we ventured inside the amphitheatre. It’s amazing it has survived since Roman times. It is now used as a musical venue and is very impressive. We ventured down below again to see lots of uncovered roman artifacts, and gladiatorial equipment. Ian did a good impression of Russell Crowe as he charged down the tunnel entrance.
We searched for ice cream but had left it too late so had to make do with pastries from the bakery.
