After a bit of breakfast contemplation we decided that we ought to see more of the region than just vines. We headed to the east of Dijon to a sculpture park at Chateau Sainte-Marie in a tiny place called Malans. As usual we didn’t follow the prescribed trail around the park but haphazardly made our way through the chateau gardens and woods finding all 40 sculptures. Some we liked, some we didn’t, some we put our own silly interpretation on. The artists were not only french but also came from surrounding European countries. It was cool and calm until we met a group of French bikers. We’re not sure whether they followed us into the cafe or we followed them but the local beer and apricot tart were delicious and the cafe had a small gallery and had something to do with the sculpture park.
The route back took us passed the Abbaye de Citeaux and although we couldn’t see it it was here that the first monks grew the first vines way back then.
