Big is beautiful

Friday 7th April 2023

We are discovering that Spain really is a big country. Although Avila is only a small town it has some very big walls. It has 80+ crenelated semi circular towers and 9 gates. To walk around the complete wall is is about 2.5km.

It was quite hard to park Max as everybody else were visiting Avila on Good Friday. Once we did we headed up into the town looking for coffee. We ended up with lunch as well, beautiful calamari and good potatas bravas with crispy pork. The good Friday procession passed by while we were eating, we caught up with the remnants coming out of the cathedral.

The walk around the walls had to be done in 2 bits, the short one and the long one. We took advantage of the break to eat ice cream, which was also big.

The walls are very well preserved, give a very good view of the cathedral and the surrounding countryside but needless to say we did not go up every crenelated tower 80 is a lot.

The drive back seemed shorter possibly because the 100’s of cyclists we passed on the way there had gone home.
