Strukli

Strukli

After visiting the Dolac market we took the shortest funicular ride in the world…? Which took us to Zagreb upper town. Zagreb is the capital of Croatia and has official government buildings. Within this very well guarded area was the beautiful small church of St. Marks. The roof was covered with coloured tiles and looked fabulous in the sunlight. The upper town also had signs of the earthquake and various building works were ongoing as in the rest of the city. Barbara was accosted by a very shiny gentleman so we had to move on quickly.

We had searched for an authentic Croatian restaurant and only found one, La Struk. It only served one type of food, but with variations. Strukli is a unique traditional Croatian dish served in most household and is made from dough and cheese. We chose 2 different flavours, salty cheese and cod fish both were delicious and baked to order so were very hot.

We went looking for the art park but never found the art so carried on up to Mirogoj Cemetery. It was originally built as a cemetery for all religions and the architecture is fantastic. Dividing the cemetery by walls between the religions was not allowed. The arcades built into the wall housed the churches and tombs of the 4 different religions in Zagreb. It had also suffered in the earthquake and had various wooden structures to support parts. It was absolutely massive and we had to avoid 2 funeral proceedings while we were there.

We definitely needed gelato after the long walk back to the centre.
