Three Minutes Past Seven

Three Minutes Past Seven

Just over 2 years ago on March 22nd 2020, in the middle of the pandemic the clocks in Zagreb stopped at 3 minutes past 7. The biggest earthquake in 140 years had stuck Zagreb, and you can still see the results today. Apart from various bits falling off buildings, as in the case of the cathedral, there are still some tremendous cracks to be seen in lots of other buildings. Lots of culturally important buildings are still shut, including galleries and museums.

However when has an earthquake stopped us two. Our first stop was Britanski Trg for the local Sunday flea market. Ten minutes after we arrived the heavens opened. Stalls were quickly covered with plastic sheets and we all waited till the rain stopped and then carried on as if nothing had happened. The sun came out and stayed all day.

We wandered again around the grid system of the lower town until we found the botanic gardens which were a delight. Lots of similar plants to the UK but the sunshine and croaking frog added to the experience.

Zagreb has lots of green spaces, beautiful parks with very well looked after beautiful flower beds. The trams are numerous (problem when driving!!!!!!!! see last nights post) and Edinburgh should get some of the old ones, they have so much more character.

A stroll down one of the main eating streets prompted a sit down with a bottle of beer, and after they we went gelato hunting.

Zagreb had lots of sculptures including a statue of Nikola Tesla, and the Well of Life by Croatian Sculptor Ivan Mestrovic.
