Plitvice Lakes National Park is only 2km from our accommodation so we walked there. Fortunately we had both taken out full set of waterproof as it rained 4 out of the 6 his of walking. We didn’t mind a bit as it meant less people and more atmosphere. What a magnificent park, very different to the Krka park and much bigger. The deepest lake is 49m and the highest waterfall is 87m, the highest in Croatia.

The board walks were interesting to walk along, and possibly would not stand up to UK health and safety standards. It was quite daunting watching the water race between the board under our feet. They obviously renew 2km of boardwalk a year and we can see why it is necessary, what a big ongoing project.

As usual we started on the short route and ended up doing the long one. We also had a very calm and serene boat ride as we glided through the mist.

We went hunting for bears in the forest above the lakes but only found a beautiful fire salamander, good job we didn’t touch it as they are slightly poisonous.

Apologies again to Sixty, we did have her coat today but she still got wet.

We avoided the tourist train preferring to walk the extra miles which gave us an alternative view of the waterfalls, some of which other people miss.

We certainly got our money’s worth today.
