Chocolate Orange Day

Chocolate Orange Day

For 100’s of years Croatians have dealt with hordes invading their lands. Today it was just us and we were a little bit less aggressive. Ston and it’s neighbour Mali (little) Ston are connected and surrounded by a 5km defensive wall and make up the longest fortress system in Europe. The walls include defensive tours and 2 big fortresses, and we walked them. The walls safe guarded the highly lucrative salt pans below then. We didn’t need it today we just need more water. Because it was Easter Sunday and we had chocolate Easter eggs we walked them both ways. Fortunately today was a little bit cooler with a strong wind so not many people as it would have been really hard to pass people on some of the narrower bits of wall. In fact today we climbed up and down more steps than in any bell tower so far.

We headed back to Trsteno arboretum, the oldest in this part of Croatia. It includes an aqueduct for irrigation, an ornate fountain an olive mill, orange trees (it was windy last night so fallen oranges we ripe for picking). Didn’t manage to see it all as we were chased out as it was closing time but we saw all the main stuff.

Sixty agreed it was chocolate orange day but couldn’t decide between Chocolate or orange so had both.

Happy Easter everyone.
