The Bells, The Bells…

Villaviciosa, Asturias, Spain

We started driving in dark the 12km to Lagos Covadonga, up 3500ft, with numerous hairpin bends and sheer drops. It was amazing, scary but amazing, as we went up above the clouds and as the sun rose over the mountains. Needless to say breakfast at the top was extra tasty. The sky was cloudless all day and the sun made the mountains look more majestic.

While it was relatively cool in the morning we took Misty on a 2 hour hike. She loved scrambling but was exhausted by lunchtime and it got too hot for her. So after lunch we did a circuit of the 2nd lake on our own, leaving misty in the cool of the van, to the sound of an orchestra warming up. Now in Spain all the animals have bells which makes a lot of bells. Cows, goats, sheep, horses all have them and it seemed only the eagles didn’t. At least none of them could creep up on us as even the cows acted like mountain goats scrambling on the rocky outcrops often above us.

The day was a mix of different landscapes and buildings. There was even an old mine. We managed to avoid the bus loads of people because we all know the just get off the bus to take a picture before getting back on the bus and we actually travelled a less trodden path.

The only thing left to do was the return drive down the mountain where we had to avoid buses, lorries, cars and even a herd of cows being walked down the road to new pastures (all with bells🤣🤣)

Overall a stupendous day 😀.
