In a galaxy far far away….
Birr castle and scientific centre was our destination today. Different again, until 1919 held the largest telescope in the world and we saw it today. We also saw the modern equivalent, I-LOFAR. A cutting edge telescope observing the universe using radio waves. We walked through gardens, passed by the oldest wrought iron suspension bridge in Ireland, saw the tallest box by edge in the world, visited a fernery, walked on a spiral path through a plantation of lime trees set to scale in the shape of the M51 spiral galaxy. The galaxy was discovered be the Earl of Rosse who built the telescope.
Also 100 year old Wisteria, st brendan’s well and a shell well, mighty 500 year old oaks and the tallest tree house in Ireland….etc… etc… Too many interesting bits to list 😀 . Another amazing place.
We wandered our way around Birr to find an ice cream before heading off to the Megalithic area of the ancient east.
